What Hotels Can and Can’t Ask

Know your rights before check-in so you can avoid confusion and handle any situation with confidence.

They may ask:

  • Whether your dog is a service animal required because of a disability
  • What task or work the dog has been trained to perform

They may not ask:

  • For documentation or proof of certification
  • About your specific disability or medical condition
  • That your dog demonstrate its task

Note: Airbnb hosts follow similar guidelines but policies can vary. Always confirm with your host before booking.

This was an easy process to renew and it something that gives me peace. I like the other benefits that are offered through this process, like Vet access for questions. Truly one of the best things I have ever done.

Common Questions

Unlike emotional support animals (ESAs), psychiatric service dogs are individually trained to perform specific tasks that directly support a qualifying mental health condition. PSDs have broader access rights under the ADA — including public access — while ESAs are primarily protected under the Fair Housing Act for housing accommodations only.
Common qualifying conditions include anxiety, depression, PTSD, bipolar disorder, and other mental health conditions that substantially limit one or more major life activities under the ADA. A licensed healthcare professional will determine if your condition qualifies during your evaluation.
Your current dog may be able to become a psychiatric service dog if they can be trained to perform specific tasks that directly support your qualifying mental health condition. A licensed healthcare professional will determine if PSD training is appropriate for you during your evaluation.
Under the ADA, trained psychiatric service dogs may accompany their handlers in public spaces where pets are not typically allowed. Public access rights are based on the dog's individual training and the handler's qualifying disability — not documentation alone.
Airlines may allow trained psychiatric service dogs when the appropriate federal DOT forms are completed. Policies vary by airline so it is always recommended to check directly with your airline before booking or traveling.
Under the ADA hotels cannot require documentation for a Psychiatric Service Dog. However having a PSD recommendation letter and understanding your dog's trained tasks can help you navigate any questions that come up at check-in with confidence.
Hotels are not required to accommodate emotional support animals the same way they accommodate service animals. Some hotels may allow ESAs as part of their pet policy but pet fees and restrictions may still apply. Calling ahead before your stay is always recommended.
